INTERVIEW-Starbucks has no plan to raise prices in China

    BOAO, China, April 13 (Reuters) - Starbucks Corp <SBUX.O>,

    the world's biggest coffee-shop chain, has no immediate plans to

    raise prices in China even though costs are climbing, a senior

    executive said over the weekend.

    "We increased our prices in China last year due to higher

    costs. Though we are still facing cost pressures, we have no plan

    now to raise prices further," Wang Jinlong, the firm's Greater

    China President, said in an interview.

    Starbucks, which has more than 300 coffee shops in China and

    is adding at least 80 more each year, is pursuing even faster

    expansion this year, Wang said.

    He was speaking on the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia

    being held on the southern Chinese island of Hainan.

    Besides consolidating its businesses in big Chinese cities

    such as Beijing and Shanghai, Starbucks would branch out into

    more second-tier cities, Wang said.

    Globally, the chain would open more than 2,000 shops in 2008,

    he added.

    Although China has a rich tea-drinking culture, Wang said his

    firm would enjoy fast expansion in the country as more and more

    Chinese, especially young people, are drinking coffee, which has

    become a symbol of western culture.

    Starbucks, which has said it expects China to become

    eventually its biggest overseas market, is not alone in seeing

    potential in China.

    Wall Street investment bank Goldman Sachs <GS.N> and Chinese

    private equity firm Whitesun Equity Partners agreed last week to

    invest $30 million in Chinese coffee shop operator C.straits Cafe

    to help it expand the number of its shops to 1,000 from 400.

    Andrea Illy, president of Italian roaster Illycafe Spa, told

    Reuters last month that he was confident rising incomes meant

    China was destined to become a big coffee market, despite poor

    current consumption of around 300,000 bags.

    "China could become in one generation maybe the fifth market

    in the world", Illy said.

    Starbucks and PepsiCo Inc <PEP.N> last year started selling

    bottled Frappuccino coffee drinks through retail stores in China,

    aiming to replicate their results in North America, where the

    business grew to $1 billion from nothing a decade ago.
